2014 The year of Conscious Body Language, By Kurt Larsson

Yoga and relax on beach at sunsetWhere do we go from here? Our current technology wave seems to be peaking as each gain is costing more and giving less. Technology is also being used as a brilliant way to separate us more and more. For instance, how much time per day do you spend on your devices? How often do you update your apps? How many passwords do you need to remember? Add to this that it is now apparent that everything, including what you are reading now, is being monitored by many other people and organizations, is it any wonder that technology’s shine is beginning to fade?!

Yet, there is no escaping the trend that everything that can be done with muscle is now or will shortly be able to be done by machine. Everything that requires intellect or calculation is now or will shortly be able to be done by computer. This means that a strong back, an extra pair of hands or another opinion are no longer as valuable as they once were. Many more of us will soon be looking for work requiring a radically different skill set. What will that skill set look like?

Chances are it will have a lot to do with what unites us and makes us humans human. That includes, but is not limited to:

–       Leadership, as in the art and practice of getting people to follow you and do stuff they probably wouldn’t do by themselves. Keep in mind that even now most types of management can now be done by “decision making” or “management” software.

–       Communication and this is not referring to another SMS, email, instagram or text. This means that which we do face to face, video or via telephone. More and more it refers to the tools necessary to even get an audience that is ready, willing and able to listen.

–       Coaching and the art and practice of getting us to unleash their best from all the baggage we tend to collect during our journey through life.

–       Listening in a way that others feel heard, understood and apreciated. Why are there now so many Selfies? Could the fact that most of the people in jail for a crime admit they are there because they ”did not feel seen or heard” be a clue to something bigger?

–       Being present to the situation and/or person in front of you here and now instead of being lost in your own thoughts.

–       Facilitating a group of individuals to combine their energy and resources in a positive and congruent way towards a common goal.

–       Resolving Conflicts in a way that resolves them at their core, promotes and encourages a strong sense of empathy and cooperation between former adversaries

–       Serving others in a way that they can feel, enjoy and everyone can gain from.

–       Cooperating in a way that adds to the synergy and team-spirit of the group of which you are part.

In short technology seems to have become very good at separating us from each other. Technology is just a tool and there are many examples of it gluing us together, but we need to become more wary of when it is not. It takes listening, warmth and compassion to unite with your fellow man. What if this is the year we finally wake up and realize that we are creating our very own version of The Matrix just by allowing ourselves to become more and more unconscious to all the forces and resources we have that distinguish us from all other forms of life?

Remember, if you don’t choose the direction you want your life to go, there are many out there that will be glad to do it for you. This is nothing new… ”Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” Thomas Jefferson. Yes, the more we offload or ignore our responsibility for our conscious behavior, the more we open the door for our own manipulation. What if many of us are finally getting this message?

With this in mind, we now have a full year ahead of us to begin getting clear on how important it is to be present and conscious of who we are and what we say and do and their effects on those around us. For some of us this will be a rude awakening to how much we have missed during our sleep. But for others and ultimately for us all, we may just begin to realize how much “ability to respond” we actually have available. Not a bad way to spend a year, huh?!

What is conscious body language good for and what are some specific tools for becoming more conscious?
Find out in the next few installments.

Here’s wishing you and yours a healthy, happy, prosperous and most of all, conscious new year!

I am fascinated with what makes us humans ”tick”, especially when it comes to how we consciously communicate and express ourselves with our body language. My business background is in international sales and sales management, selling everything from automobile tires in Houston, Tx, to retail banking delivery systems in 20 countries. I have graduated from CoachU’s 3 year Coach Training program, been certified as an Extended DISC consultant and become a Certified International Body Harmony Teacher with over 20 years of ”hands-on” experience in bodywork. This rich and varied background combined with over 20 years of being an entrepreneur has blessed me with insights and experiences I never would have noticed in the corporate world. Mainstream business now seems to be waking up to the riches available from more conscious and responsible business practices. Expanding Understanding’s Sensational Soft Skills Toolbox , the books I have written and training I have developed now provide savvy decision makers and their colleagues measurable results and a more restful night's sleep. These tools provide an edge in consciously understanding, deliberately using and profiting from the most powerful communication tool available, our bodies. I look forward to meeting you on this path to mastery in non verbal communication.
