Adjusting what makes us tick, By Kurt Larsson

or… “Deinstitutionalizing” your Structure of Emotion

IMG_1482For most of us our behavior patterns are as accessible and easy to change as our favorite institutions. Yet, what if your ability to consciously change your behavior is becoming easier and more effective to affect? What if the excuse “Well, that’s just who I am” is no longer believable? For anyone fed up with feeling like a victim or not wishing to feel manipulated, either by others or often some previous version of themselves, there are tools and methods to help. So for those of you that are looking for real, measurable change in your life, what are you waiting for?

We humans are driven by behavior patterns created during different emotional events in our lives. Some contribute greatly to becoming the person we wish to be, others take us further away from that goal, while most just land somewhere in the middle. Despite that this information has now been available for quite sometime, there are many of us who still operate, and suffer, as if these patterns are hard-wired into our being.

Behavior was once described as ”structure in motion” (unknown).

My interpretation of this quote is that we humans consciously build our behavior patterns, forget them and then unconsciously run our lives through them. This process occurs regardless of whether or not these patterns are up to date or appropriate right here, right now. This procedure is designed to produce a result that supports the conclusion which was taken, regarding a similar situation, long ago in our formative years. This led to that pattern being created in the first place. This process could almost be called the “Institutionalization” of behavior as new evidence and fuel is constantly needed to support, justify and grow each behavior’s existence. Just like old institutions, the older they get, the more solid and devine they seem to become. Just look at the current state of government, banking, education and religion, to name a few. Is it any wonder we are fascinated by institutions, even when they lose touch with the people and values they were originally created for? Just as there were once living, breathing and thoughtful human founders behind most institutions, there is also a living, breathing and thoughtful  human being behind your most sacred behavior. The more you can reach the people behind these great marble facades, the more you can help affect positive change. Ironically, it seems the older and more over used both institutions and behaviors become, the more they become unreachable.

This is perhaps a gross oversimplification by  this non-academic body worker and coach, but see if you can use it to explain the many examples of this process and its consequences in your own life as well as of those around you. For instance, do you have someone in your  surroundings that when faced with a certain situation usually resorts to a common (often unconscious) behavior and then complains about its result?

Perhaps you know someone who constantly complains about:

Being overweight as they take that extra portion of dessert?

  • How out of shape they are as they pour themselves another wine, beer or soda.
  • Receiving nasty comments for showing up late again to a scheduled meeting.
  • Not being heard as they babble about something, using 1000 words to describe what could have been understood in 10.
  • Feeling disrespected while constantly sacrificing what little integrity they have left to please someone’s whims, whom they often don’t even like.
  • How they hate their job but never look for a new one.
  • Always being broke, but never saves any money
  • Being lonely as a boss after opening their office door only long enough to bark some orders to their staff.

Now multiply this behavior by an entire office, organization or (dare we say?) institution.

These situations are all usually triggered by old emotional patterns that have little or nothing to do with what is happening here and now. Yet, each one of these behaviors and millions of others like them provide the person exhibiting them with some sort of emotional, yet unconscious reward. In fact, researchers have now mapped and pinpointed the different areas of the brain which become activated by the different emotions.

What is new here is that there may be lots more to gain by locating the source of that emotion in the rest of your body as well. Whenever you feel joy, sadness, happiness, anger, inspiration, resignation or any other emotion there are certain sensations that occur in specific areas of your body. What if it is time to explore our entire physiology to find out what makes these sensations tick as well as how to modify, adjust, erase or replace them? In other words, It may be of benefit to your health, your aspirations and your quality of life to study your emotional structure and how it occurs in your body.

This is an important portion of the work we do and the fun we have during a Body Harmony® session. We invite and encourage you to look objectively at your emotions and the behaviors they cause, to explore their roots, learn to release them  along with any pent-up or surrounding tension. This process effectively frees up stuck energy and it provides more space to express yourself as well as enjoy life. For anyone feeling stuck in their life, regardless of the area, Body Harmony® provides a great set of tools, competence and a soft, conscious touch to help you unstick your emotional institutions.

Each cell has the capacity for both memory and communication. It takes energy for cells to remember and communicate. It takes even more when an entire community of cells (for example a muscle or a series of muscles) are stuck in an old behavior pattern triggered by an emotion. What if the source of that cramp you have in your leg or that ”pain in your neck” is an old memory or experience which can now be addressed and resolved using an efficient and proven procedure that has no side effects?

This is where the borders between science and magic become fuzzy. The procedure is not hard to affect, but its effects can vary greatly due to the mindset you have while doing it. Just like life, if you allow yourself to be open, curious and full of wonder regarding the process, your results will probably be much different than, if you are already an expert on how ridiculous this sounds and how you should have taken your usual pain killer.
Sometimes different is better.
