Conscious Body Language, So What?!  By Kurt Larsson

Gestures 19So 2014 will be the year that many of us wake up and realize we’ve been asleep at the wheel of the most important communication tool we have… Our bodies. … And?

Yep, up until now most have us have taken our incredible ability to monitor, control (or at least influence) and benefit from what our bodies are actually doing, for granted, while we drown in our own swamp of thoughts.
So far, this policy of ignorance has worked fairly well, has it not?

Yet, how can we begin to answer the  question of “how well it has worked” until we compare it to something?

For instance, please reflect over your own answers to the following questions:

–       How many people do you know or have heard of who ”worked themselves to death”?

–       How often do you get head, stomach or back aches?

–       How much medication do you take to avoid or deaden your bodily pains?

–       How active are you and what limits you from being more active?

–       What thoughts or actions are stopping you from achieving all you want from life?

–       Do you admit to or fear you have any addictions, obsessions or compulsions?

–       How easy is it to maintain your desirable weight?

–       Do you keep getting into the same arguments with the same people?

–       How easy is it to get your message heard, understood and acted upon?

In short, how conscious do you actually dare to feel and what does that look like to the rest of us out there?

What if your answers to these questions and many others are a direct function of how much awareness you choose to have over your body and its functions?

Take food as an example
Over the past generation we have undergone a radical transformation regarding how we eat. It seems that more and more of us are actually putting two and two together and realizing that the old ”Garbage In- Garbage out” /”Quality in – quality out” rule applies to what we eat. Despite a fair amount of bull-headed opposition, it is becoming very obvious for anyone, conscious enough to notice, that what you put into your body and how often that happens sooner or later shows up on your waistline, in your well-being and in your ability to perform in an optimal way.

Many know this truth and will even argue for it, but still refuse to accept and implement it. While for others this healthy eating trend has become so popular that there are multitudes of cookbooks, websites, blogs and TV programs extolling the virtues of cooking simple, wholesome and tasty foods. This whole process can be simply described as our ability of becoming more conscious of what we eat. From there to including everything that has to do with our conscious observation and monitoring of our bodies is not as big a stretch as it might seem.

What if the same principle of ”Garbage in- Garbage out” applies when we put our thoughts into action? Many are the wise men who have said that our bodies are but an expression of our thoughts. If so, then how much do you know about how your thoughts are showing up for all who consciously choose to see it?

All this information is absolutely available. It is there for the world to clearly see.

You can choose to ignore it, but what if there are others that see this as an opportunity?
What if many of these opportunists may not have your best interests in mind, regardless of what they say?

Did you know for instance, that there was a study done many years ago asking muggers in New York what they looked for in their victim’s body language that signaled an easy mark? Did you know their answer had to do with the type and flow of the step you took? Yes, they would actually choose their ”easy targets” by observing passers-by whose walk did not seem in balance, a gait that was either longer or shorter than what looked/felt “normal”. For those of us who do not wished to be mugged, robbed on the street; being conscious of how we walk could be useful information.

Now, is the size of the step you take something you can consciously change? (But, more importantly, will you?)

Now, what about consciously observing and changing:

–       The amount of air that you take in to give you more inspiration?

–       Your ability to be more present to life and taking better advantage of its bounty, here and now?

–       The straightness in your posture to generate and attract more of what you want?

–       The openness of your body language to attract new, easier going friends?

–       The decisiveness of your gestures and how determined you are to reach your goals?

–       The softness of your knees, hips and feet to minimize the need for joint replacements?

–       The way you stand to minimize the load (read pain) in your lower back?

–       The way you use gravity to help improve your muscle tone?

–       The way you hold your head to decrease depression and increase joy?

These are just a few of an unlimited number of conscious adjustments you can make immediately which can positively add to your health, relationships and to your joy in living. Could there also be small adjustments that could also improve your ability and chances  to get a better job and attract more money too?

Although there are countless stories of my clients realizing all kinds of unbelievable results, the best way, the most convincing way is to test them yourself. Of course there are tools that can help you along this magical path. We will look at some of these ”sensational soft skills” over the next few installments.
