Holiday Stress and Conscious Body Language Training

Conscious Body Language can reduce holiday stress

body language, stress, relax, holidays, body language trainingThe visible and sensual connection between stress and conscious body language should be most obvious around the holidays, yet it isn’t. With the Holidays fast approaching, stress levels increase dramatically as we try to finish up work, shop and prepare everything for the end of the year. This,of course, occurs on top of all our usual daily agenda. Does this feel like an increasingly impossible task for you too?

Body Language, missing, overlooked or ignored?

Yet to show the world that we can take it, we often overlook, avoid or ignore our what our bodies are saying as well as the body language of those around us. We exchange pleasantries, wish each other a nice holiday and press on to reach our goals before the year-end deadline. If your body resists or protests with symptoms such as:

  • tension and sweating
  • shallow breathing
  • faster heart rate
  • redness in the face or cheeks
  • interrupted sleeping patterns or nightmares

Most of us just seem to ignore them or often choose to take a pill instead. This strategy is losing its effectiveness and beginning to be seen as the quick, cosmetic fix it is, as more and more pills are needed in stronger doses. Then, if we notice these symptoms in others it is often deemed impolite to bring them up in the conversation. Times are changing, but are they changing quickly enough?

Here is a little year-end present of some simple, sensational tips to reduce your end of the year stress. They need no prescriptions and have no side effects.

  • Breathe more. You can get rid of up to 75% of your body’s toxins just by exhaling fully and then filling your lungs with a long, conscious and joyous inhale. Your body will feel softer with each breath.
  • Touch your pointer finger to your ”hara” point, located about one inch below your navel or touch the tip of your nose. This, along with breathing more consciously, will help you become more present.
  • Feel more. Buck today’s trend and actually pay attention to what your body is telling you. Notice that where you feel pain you will usually discover tension.
  • Relax those parts of your body that are tense and hurt, relax more with each exhale and observe how the pain often subsides. Sometimes it can hurt more before it begins to hurt less. It is your responsibility to adjust your relaxing to accommodate your pain threshold.
  • Work with gravity instead of against it. Stand upright; meaning, if you can raise your body straight up from the pads of your feet you are standing ”up right” instead of ”up tight”.
  • Allow your shoulders and back to hold up your head instead of your neck muscles and you probably relieve some or all of a persistent head or neck ache.
  • Use gravity’s healing effect. many back aches and discomforts can be reduced or eliminated by laying down on a hard, flat surface and breathing as described above until you can begin to feel the muscles relaxing and your body sinking into the surface. What if adjusting your body to your environment is healthier than vice versa?

Relax your body and enjoy more of the holidays

The main message here is to be fully relaxed, present and conscious to what is happening here and now. Separating yourself from your thoughts will bring you a long way towards being present and enjoying the holidays more. It is often forgotten that when you deaden your senses either by shutting them down or medicating them you deaden enjoyable ones along with the ones that hurt. Addressing those feelings, especially of tight, tense muscles in your body that are uncomfortable or hurt allows you the opportunity to deal with them and reduce the discomfort once and for all.

Sign of the times Disclaimer: Even these simple stress reducing exercises should only be done by you who takes full responsibility for your own body. Just because they work sensationally on my body does not mean they will on yours. Health and success depend at least as much on your attitude as they do upon following instructions. If you are at all doubtful about any of these tips described here, then consult your physician first. It’s your body and it’s your life. Make them great! Happy Holidays!
