Curious Listening

Listening and Body Harmony,  By Kurt Larsson

Listening with all the senses is one of the reasons why working with the common sense and magic of the body is at least as effective as many of the medications we have now been trained to take. Since there are no measurable side-effects from working with your body other than relaxation and enjoyment, it may even a better alternative. Of the countless methods of working with the body that exist we will focus upon Body Harmony as the most effective of these methods. Why?
To start with the following reasons pop up:

  • The level and quality of listening involved
  • It is non-intrusive and only works with the permission of all involved
  • It uses gravity, the most effective healing power we may have.
  • It is inspiring and enjoyable

The topic today is the level and quality of listening involved.
There are a number of different approaches to bodywork from traditional massage to energy and long distance healing. Most include some common techniques, yet one seems to stand out when working with non-intrusive forms of bodywork and that is Body Harmony. One of the primary rudiments that distinguishes Body Harmony from other forms of body work is the importance of listening with all your senses to what is happening in both your client’s body as well as your own. This ability to discovering without by looking within is also a defining property of all of the Sensational Soft Skillis in Expanding Understanding’s Toolbox.

Listening seems to be a skill that has gone into neglect. Probably the clearest evidence of this is that when they were asked for the reason they chose a life of crime, a large portion of the prison population responded with they did not feel seen or heard. Also, most of our present school system seems to more and more be based upon an authority (teacher) declaring something factual and the rest learning it so that they can repeat it back for the test. This method has little to no regard for questioning the fact’s validity or discovering and enjoying the wonder of it’s origin. The idea of listening ”between the lines” for what else is there is something that seems to be missing in our current society’s toolbox of coping skills. Could these behaviors be limiting our collective potential to be even better at who we are and what we do?

Listening is where Body Harmony Shines!
One of the keystones to a good Body Harmony session is the ability of the practitioner to listen with empathy, curiosity and wonder, then serve their client from the client’s perspective. The client is totally in control and you as the practitioner are there as a willing and helpful tool with no judgements or opinions. You are a willing and curious traveler on this trip together through your client’s body. The more you can, as the practitioner, open yourself up to hear the language of the tissue, body and person that you are working on, the more magical the session becomes for you both. You literally lose yourself in this dance of wellness with your client and the whole session becomes about the client breaking through boundaries they often didn’t know existed. The Bonus that is known by all good bodyworkers is that you cannot give a good session without receiving one in return. Win/Win in its essence!

 ”The Issue in the Tissue”
For instance, if we just focus upon pain, much of the pain we experience is caused by tense, stressed or otherwise “dis-eased” tissue? It takes energy to hold a muscle or a joint so tightly that it begins to hurt. And what are we normally trained to do? Instead of focusing upon relaxing the area in question, we try to ignore it, or cautiously keep it tight so we don’t damage it further or we take a pill… Hoping that the pain will somehow disappear on its own. Most pain killers now succeed in killing the pain, but how many address the root cause of the pain in the first place? What any good body worker knows is that if you carefully  and curiously listen, feel and sense what the tissues are trying to express and the more the tissues feel heard, the easier time they have of relaxing and releasing that tension. Often that tension can be associated with some memory, incident or issue from your client’s past. When it is heard and acknowledged it no longer needs to remain stuck in that tissue. The muscle or tissue relaxes and the energy formerly needed to hold that issue in place can now be used for something more effective and enjoyable.

Can getting rid of pain be so easy?
The answer seems to depend quite a bit on how open the client is to such a suggestion. It seems to be a function of the Placebo Effect as the more you believe that releasing tension in this fashion is possible the more room there is for miracles to happen. One example that stands out for me is when I was working on a lady that had just been operated on to remove a tumor. The stress from this event had caused her neck to become so tense that she could not sleep or even sit long enough to relieve herself comfortably. When she was done with her first session she was pain free for over four hours, She even went up and enjoyed a shower for the first time since her operation. After the second session the pain in her neck was gone for good. Despite being a nurse, she had never experienced this kind of treatment before, but since her pain was so intense she was totally open for any kind of relief. This seem to make her results come more powerfully and faster.

Miraculous things happen when you as the client and your practitioner listen and dance your way through these tense parts of your body. Tendons that felt as stiff as bone begin to loosen up and work as tendons again. Muscle tissue that was acting like tendons begins to soften up and act like muscle again and all that energy that was being spent holding these body parts tightly can now be used for something else. What is even more wonderful is that often when the issue is exposed to the listening of the practitioner and client it disappears altogether. It is like ”wiping the slate clean” from any history of tension than in some cases was built up over decades. How could our world work if we employed this kind of listening in business, politics and medicine, for instance?

These issues often represent barriers in the form of conscious and unconscious beliefs that we have either inherited or picked up in our journeys. The more of them we  hear and discover the more we can erase, adjust or strengthen them to help us achieve more of what we want from life. This is why we do not refer to Body Harmony as just a form of healing or intuitive massage, but rather as an educational technology to help realize your true human potential. Not bad for a few minutes on the table…

Can we listen in real life too?
What is fascinating is that this same technology for listening and understanding the underlying issues that are causing dis-ease in a body can be used with great effect in daily conversations and relationships. Whether at the office or not, listening with all your senses will often uncover the real bedrock issues that can be causing tension and confilcts. This common sensical approach to how we interact is what gives Expanding Understanding’s Senastional Soft Skills Toolbox™ its power and magic. The more everyone involved is open to this and willing to resolve the issue the more ease, efficiency and enjoyment can be realized by all.
