Yet, assisting clients to study their posture, emotional structures and behavioral patterns can only be done effectively if I choose to first study my own. This past weekend’s course I held on ”connections” provided just such an opportunity.  While digging into the connections that drive and hinder the course participants I struck behavioral gold myself. It became clear how, even after all the years of “hands-on” study, I had shut down my inner voice of reason and in the process surrendered my personal sovereignty. I was sensing it (as in mechanically measuring what was going on inside) but hardly feeling it what it was doing to me and those around me.

Open or closed?
As we participants dove into the different relationships we have in our work and free-time, we began to discover our relationships to relationships and the behavior patterns they cause. Some participants were very open and made it easy to attract what was wanted, for example: success, better health, money, love, friends, etc. and some were very closed and created obstacles which made it hard to attract what was wanted, for example success, better health, money, love, friends, etc. Most graciously admitted to being unaware of both.

Conscious or unconscious?
What stood out for us all was that, consciously and (more often) unconsciously we had all chosen or been forced to make choices about managing each relationship, thanks to our situations and circumstances. Our biography had literally become our biology. Those choices were now literally built or structured into our physiological make-up and could be seen or sensed by the rest of the group. Once aware of this, it was then much easier and much more effective to coach that person to let go of, modify or enhance that emotional structure. It also allowed them to actively align themselves with their stand in life and what they wanted to achieve. It is always fascinating to witness how enjoyable this Eureka process is to the person experiencing it, how relieved and thankful they become working through it.

No secrets?
No indeed, just by observing, sensing and trusting your intuition, all this information is available to you and anyone else who is willing to look. Does this mean that someone else can see and sense all this in you too? Absolutely! Whether you like it or not, you are an open book to all that have learned to read this language. Since cracking this code myself, I am just amazed how few people are willing to sense and use this power and utility to gather more information, make better decisions and create more powerful, profitable and enjoyable relationships. Your understanding of this ”language of the body” can provide you a distinct edge when it comes to such things as:

–       Listening to and understanding others in a way they can literally feel

–       Presenting to others to ”move” them into action

–       Encouraging people to buy a product or idea rather than selling it.

–      Leading others in a way they are inspired to follow

–      Resolving conflicts in a way that leaves all parties satisfied and empowered

–      Agreeing with others to make durable, mutually profitable business alliances

This does not even mention the power to create better relationships with your nearest and dearest or how it can positively affect your health.

The Possibility:
Whether you lead, sell, serve or just communicate with others, learning the ”language of the body” will give you much more power and control over your own situation and each relationship you create and nurture. More importantly, it will also give you both the tools and insights into discovering and handling what others do to manipulate your thoughts, beliefs and behavior. Yet, this will do very little good unless you understand the grounding principle of personal sovereignty; that it comes from within.

When you can begin to open up your inner core to experience and trust your own self-worth and common sense. When you really begin to have faith in those universal truths that can only be found in the silence and peace of your inner self, only then you will really be calling the shots in your own life.

Currently, we are being bombarded with so much information and stimulus from our surroundings that is almost impossible to hear that inner voice.  We all still have it, but just like a muscle that is not exercised, it will lose its conditioning and wither. This muscle used to be called common sense, but just take a quick glance at the news or at all the people glued to their smart phones and you may still be able to sense its disappearance. You may also experience a sense of how hollow our society has become. You get double bonus points if you also notice how easy it is to lose track of what you value compared to what all the advertisements say you need.
How does this really feel?
More importantly, how do you refill your hollow void and get this inner sense and strength back?
Here are some Sensational Soft Skill  tips:

–       Relax and calm down

–       Sense and feel what is happening within your body especially deep within your core.

–       Notice how your environment influences this. Whether you feel happy, mad, nervous, rage, love or despair, congratulations, you’re still alive!

–       Breathe deeply and fully sensing where in your body the air flow passes freely and where it is stopped or hindered.

–       Celebrate the understanding that your being able to feel something/anything means you are not a zombie and can change.

–       Observe what is going on around you without mechanically reacting to common queues.

–       Detach yourself from those triggers that normally ”drive you insane”.

–       Check what you are feeling inside. Take a deep breath and then consciously choose to respond to the situation, remaining grounded and open for new possibilities.

If the above steps sound so simple that you are wondering why you are still reading this, you are warmly and calmly invited to inquire how committed you are to consistently implementing them in your life? Have you noticed yet that excitement is one of the best ways for others to distract you from what is really important to be the best you can be? Remember, deers can get so excited by seeing a pair of headlights that they often freeze in the most inappropriate places. Who is really in charge of what gets you excited?

If you get a sense of how these simple tools can give you more control over you and your behavior, you are invited to think about how they and over 120 other tools we have developed in the Expanding Understanding’s Sensational Soft Skills Toolbox, can enhance your ability to lead, sell, serve, create and relate.
