Reading and Interpreting Body Language is a Good Start

interpreting Body Language, non verbal communication, communicationReading body language and interpreting body language have recently become hot topics.

Great! It’s about time we start understanding the power, leverage and profit you can harness when you start to master non verbal communication. But is this the end of the story?

There are all kinds of Gurus out there offering their courses and manuals full of interpretations about what specific body language gestures mean. The good ones even admit that most body language cannot be interpreted correctly without taking into account the context or situation in which it is expressed.
Crossing your arms means what?

People crossing their arms can be signaling any of the following feelings:

Insecurity

A chill

Defensiveness

Aloofness

Expertise

In fact, a very powerful and charismatic leader will sometimes cross his/her arms to diminish the meeting space they are taking. This gesture can encourage other more timid participants to better express themselves. But it gets more complicated.
What about an insecure person who feels a chill yet also wants to appear aloof?
What do their crossed arms actually mean?

There is seems to be a significant piece of the Body Language Puzzle still missing.

What if this is where mastering Conscious Body Language comes in?

Yes, you can learn to sense (as in measure and compare) each and every gesture and micro-expression, but so can a biometric computer… Without developing a sense (as in feeling) of what is happening in both yourself and the others involved you may still get it wrong. Consequences can easily range from a lost sale to lost trust to a child’s broken heart, even though the book says you are correct.

Developing your ability and your intuition to ”feel” the context and texture of the body language being expressed opens up a whole new dimension of possibilities. This involves discovering ”The Issue in the Tissue”. What if this is the missing link to how we as humans can better communicate, relate and prosper together?

Just for fun, think of a world without intrusion.

Think of world where we all are brought up to sense and respect each others personal boundaries. A world where we learn to ask permission before we enter them. We are already doing it more and more on the internet with so-called ”permission marketing”. Why can’t we just keep expanding our understanding to include doing this with one another in person?

Sensing the language of the body in person, here and now, is the next challenge.
You have also probably already figured out that we humans do not always react, respond or behave in the same way. Knowing the textbook examples of what certain body language gestures mean will absolutely help put you in the ball park. Yet without consulting the very time-sensitive manual for just that person standing in front of you, here and now, how can you be sure you have found the correct interpretation? The process of finding the right page at the right time in your own manual and then matching that with the correct page in your listener’s manual is no easy task. That’s where a few of our Sensational Soft Skills can come in very handy, such as:

Being present

Breathing to inspire

Listening with all your senses
