Sensational Presentation Skill, Empower your Public Speaking Presence

The Power of Presence in Public Speaking

Inspiring Presentations,Actively engaging your listeners requires a strong dose of the essential public speaking skill known as presence. Or, can you realistically expect to move your listeners into action when you and your own thoughts are someplace else? In fact, how are you even sure that you really understand what it is?

Presence many sound fairly straightforward and you may think you are regularly in this state, but just for fun, go ahead and describe its qualities and properties. How many did you come up with?

More importantly, what is the prime tool to permit you to reach this state when you choose, regardless of the circumstances?

The basics:

Break this skill down to basics and we can either be present, actively engaging with the people and reality happening around us here and now, or we can be “up in our heads” engaged with some distant thought or memory. One state allows us to influence and shape our current reality. In the other we can only think about it. If you are speaking in public to lead or unite your listeners, selling something to them or somehow trying to serve them, which of these two states do you think will be more effective?

Yet before we can even begin to influence others and create a desired result, it may be helpful to clarify a bit more what we mean and then describe how it feels. That sensational word “feel” may be the Key. What if the Key to becoming present here and now, is to practice both feeling what is physiologically happening within you while trying to intuit what is happening around you?

To focus on the Skill, think about:

  • When is the only time that you are actually able to feel something?
  • For instance, try remembering an emotionally charged experience from your past such as graduation, a wedding, or a the loss of a friend. Whether you remember a happy or sad event, when do you physically experience whatever feeling you conjure up?
  • Now think about something that may happen tomorrow. When do you actually sense the physiological feeling connected with this future event?
  • If both your answers were here and now, you are now ready to ask if you can ever feel anything out of present time?
  • What if, in fact, it is physically impossible to feel anything out of real time?

Your own evidence and reflection should probably confirm that the only time you physiologically feel anything is in the present, here and now. So, if you are currently feeling something, congratulations!

Regardless of whether you sense anger, fear, nervousness, joy, sadness, a pain in the neck, that old shoulder injury, or anything else, rejoice. You are still alive; able to feel, and are therefore, present to the power and leverage of being here, now.

Combining this ability with the sensational presentation skill of inspiration will be a powerful combination that should drastically decrease your nervousness while dramatically increasing your confidence to serve and satisfy each of your listeners on their terms.
