The Gravity of Leadership, by Kurt Larsson

Gravity is one the most powerful forces we humans have to deal with. It constantly, relentlessly and equally pulls us all towards the center of the earth. Work with the law of gravity and you will probably find it one of the best healing forces  available. If you choose instead to break the law of gravity you risk:

  • Capital punishment from being crushed by something heavy or falling from too high a place,
  • Being charged with a misdemeanor like falling down, breaking a leg or needlessly draining yourself of energy and vitality.

If you wish to be a powerful leader, knowing whether you consciously abide by this law or being guilty of fighting this powerful and unforgiving force may be worth your while.
Becoming aware of this may be easier by observing those around you.

  • Watch how many people stand, sit, walk and run using the law of gravity.
  • Observe how many are even conscious of their relationship to gravity.
  • Notice how many are leaning forward, backward, to one side or the other.

Now regarding your own relationship to gravity, how do you consciously carry yourself? Upright or up-tight?

Upright means that you are allowing the power of gravity to flow effortlessly through your body while using none of your precious energy to hinder its power and flow.

Uptight means that you are (consciously or not) straining or tense from expending vital energy to withstand this natural and omnipotent force. Keep in mind, you can be wasting lots of your vitality holding your posture out of gravity and be so used to it that you cannot even notice it!

Note: Add ”ignorance” of one’s conscious use of gravity to our expanding definition of ”human doing”.

Leadership is about efficiency. The more efficiently you use your own and others’ energy, the more stuff gets done with less effort. If you have a limited amount of energy to work with during the day and end up using a good portion of that fighting mother earth’s gravitational pull, how wise, effective or worthy of being followed is that?

Therefore, a tip:
Do you want to be seen and appreciated as an attractive leader?
One who is grounded to the earth and who has his/her head high in the heavens?
Do you want to start feeling better from the healing effects of this wonderful force, without side effects?

Then start practicing being more conscious of your use of gravity.

Distinguishing management from leadership is made easier by focusing on the Gravity of Leadership. Below are some factors which may distinguish a grounded leader from a busy manager. For instance:

What if even well meaning managers spend a large part of their waking lives up ”in their thoughts”, paying little attention to how they consciously present themselves and use their bodies?

Often you will notice their heads will be tilting unconsciously forward aimed towards the next project on their to-do list. This is especially true of someone talking on their cell/mobile phone. The result is often a strained upper back and neck (with often no idea where it came from). Disregarding the health aspects of this unnatural strain on ther posture and their lack of presence to you here and now, how attracted are you to follow such body language?

What if leaders consciously concern themselves with the flow of gravity through the cells in their body?

Focus now on someone you enjoy following. Notice the effect their posture has on their health and ability to radiate presence and decisiveness. Enjoy the ease and effect this has on attracting you to follow them. Focus also on how grounded they are, how they radiate their message and how easily it is welcomed by you and other listeners.

The more you can observe the mechanics of how attractive people ground themsleves using gravity, the more you can begin to test those mechanics on your own body language. Below are some simple soft skills to get you started and help make it easier for you to harness the power of the earth’s gravitational pull:

  1. Feel the force of gravity flowing through you by relaxing enough to sense it.
Consciously observe whether you are obeying its laws or breaking them.
  2. Notice others around you and sense the ones to whom you are attracted. Observe their relation to gravity. Test what you are noticing from their posture and gestures on yourself by acting them out and see what it feels like.
  3. Now test the reverse. Notice the ones that you would never follow and copy their body language. Note any differences in how you feel and observe their effect upon those around you.
  4. Relax even more, soften up you knees, hips and shoulder girdle. Allow your muscles hold you up instead of locking your bones and joints in place. Then, go back to your nomal ”Business as usual” stance.
Observe what this looks in a mirror and sense how it feels. Want to avoid knee and hip replacements? This is a good place to start.
  5. Arch your lower back inwards and align your entire back with gravity while sitting. Sit on the front of your sitzbones and sense how much more alert you become. Observe also what effect this has on the postures of others around you. Notice how much easier and deeper you can breathe when you open up your rib cage in this manner. Positioning yourself like this before you make that important phone call will increase the resonance and therefore, the believability of your voice.
  6. Remember the importance of how you hold your head up.
  7. Test all of the above when leading others and notice what happens to the listening and attention you receive from those following you.
  8. Note, learn, test, adjust and improve accordingly.

As usual dear reader, it is you who gets to choose how you use gravity. You also get to enjoy the consequences of your choice regarding your health, your apperance and your attractiveness as a leader.
