The Impact of conscious body language, By Kurt Larsson

Curious ListeningThe impact of conscious body language, By Kurt Larsson

More than a few of the decision makers I talk to have noticed their customer’s decision cycle is getting longer as well as there is an increase in those who politely say ”I’ll get back to you” and then never do. Whatever the reason, there is a growing sense of urgency that cultivating more business is becoming more challenging and something needs to be done.

The biggest, most positive trend I have seen in my profession this year is the increase in interest of decision makers wanting to know more about the power and effect of consciously aligning their thoughts, words, and deeds with their body language. Some areas they see a use of these Soft skills are to:

Become more present to the situation happening around you right here, right now.

Ground yourself in a way that you can feel more stable and secure wherever you happen to be.

Listen with all your senses to detect both what is being said and not said

Trust your inner senses more regarding what a person in front of you stands for by better understanding the speaker’s body language

Serve others in a way that attracts them to do more business with you and inspires them to warmly and spontaneously recommend you and your organization to others.

Remain calmer and maintain your ability to reflect and respond to a question or an offer even when it is packaged as a ”once in a lifetime opportunity” or as a thinly veiled threat.

Say ”no” and stand for it even when it would feel more comfortable to discount your gut feeling and utter a weak ”yes”.

Decide more effectively and stand for each decision.

Handle the consequences of your decisions in a way that works for all concerned.

Create a more powerful sense of team spirit

Stress less, enjoy more while feeling better about leaving the office at the office

Body Language, the final frontier

The incredible advances of CRM efficiency and increasing internet sales success over the past few years may have masked a growing problem. The further in to our technological gadgets we get, the harder it is to get others to emotionally engage in a meaningful conversation. Just have a seat in a train or a walk through a high school cafeteria, look around and you will see this problem is still starting to grow.

Unless you happen to have the skills, luck and timing to be launching the next big thing, you are facing a bigger and bigger wall of communicative resistance. Copywriters seem to be reaching the limits of how to construct saleszy advertising slogans and more and more people are screening out sales calls from their phones. Those who still seek contact are often both more sophisticated and more suspicious of something new. It seems to be becoming increasingly challenging to get someone to engage in yet a new business or consumer opportunity.

Herein lies an opportunity!

What if when you actually do come in contact with another human being that they treat you like one also? Wouldn’t the fact that you felt seen, heard and understood ”move” you to pay closer attention to them and their message?

There are certain human (referred to currently as) soft skills that make others feel more secure, comfortable and heard. There are others that allow you to detect when this information is not 100% authentic. Detecting liars and sociopathic behavior is also becoming more and more important when dealing with others as more and more people with these types of behavior seem to be rising to positions of power. Here are some tips to help you through the body language jungle:

Face the person you are listening to with an open and interested posture. Allow the speaker finish and repeat back what you have heard to confirm you heard what was said correctly.

Take a deep, reflective and joyous breath between the time your speaker finishes the question and you respond with your answer.

Use your right hand and right eye to emphasize an important fact or point

Open up the left side of your body to demonstrate your ability to listen receptively to what is being said.

Shake hands with a soft, firm conscious touch and see if you can begin to sense the incredible amount of information present in this normally automatic gesture.

Walk with your feet parallel to one another aimed directly at your goal and see if you sense a stronger resolve to reach your destination.

Stand with your feet open in an approximate 90 degree angle allowing your pelvis to open up. Open up your arms in a welcoming gesture and see if you do not feel more receptive to your environment (and the person speaking to you)?

Say a firm, definite “no” with a warm smile on your face and see if the message is received more easily than with a serious and more defensive look on your face.

I am fascinated with what makes us humans ”tick”, especially when it comes to how we consciously communicate and express ourselves with our body language. My business background is in international sales and sales management, selling everything from automobile tires in Houston, Tx, to retail banking delivery systems in 20 countries. I have graduated from CoachU’s 3 year Coach Training program, been certified as an Extended DISC consultant and become a Certified International Body Harmony Teacher with over 20 years of ”hands-on” experience in bodywork. This rich and varied background combined with over 20 years of being an entrepreneur has blessed me with insights and experiences I never would have noticed in the corporate world. Mainstream business now seems to be waking up to the riches available from more conscious and responsible business practices. Expanding Understanding’s Sensational Soft Skills Toolbox , the books I have written and training I have developed now provide savvy decision makers and their colleagues measurable results and a more restful night's sleep. These tools provide an edge in consciously understanding, deliberately using and profiting from the most powerful communication tool available, our bodies. I look forward to meeting you on this path to mastery in non verbal communication.
