The myth of thinking for yourself, By Kurt Larsson

Everything is speeding up.

Is there anyone you know who does not have more to do than they have time for?

There are many studies that point to that we are getting more efficient,
but how much of that efficiency is computer and/or machine driven?

Regardless, many of us feel more and more stress in our lives!

What gives?

With the advent of the personal computer and most importantly Lotus 123 and Excel, keeping track of performance became something any manager with a spreadsheet could do. To paraphrase a friend, ”since the advent of the Personal Computer Spreadsheet we have all been condemmed to live and perform in one of those many spreadsheet cells”. We can now be observed, measured and compared in every possible way.

If your particular task is mostly routine then this will work pretty well until some parts of you wear out. If your tasks require a bit of thinking and insight how effective can you continue to remain when you constantly feel under this pressure to perform?

A successful web designer described to me what is now necessary to create a good web page, one that will attract and keep people coming back. Most everything he mentioned had to do with quickly providing the information in an effective way to  ”lazy and possibly spoiled” readers. Most of us are now so used to getting what we want, how we want it that we regard this as normal. Many now tend to disregard any information that is not served up, exactly how we expect it. Many may call this process effective, but how effective is it if you are the least bit interested in seeing the whole, unfiltered picture and thinking freely about it and its consequences for yourself?

Advertising people realized long ago that the easiest way to get us to buy something is to find out what we were looking for and then satisfy those needs. This works very well for their bottom line, but in the long run how much do you have to exercise your brain to reflect, think and decide for yourself? This can make your life easier, but only because there will always be someone who understands how to profit from thinking for you.
You may also ponder if these opportunists always have your best interests in mind?

Now multiply this trend of having your thoughts served up for you by someone else times the explosion of time consuming choices we now have to make. How much time and energy do you have to still freely reflect, think and act for yourself? Especially now that most of us have been conditioned and take for granted the belief that we actually still do so?

What if the gift that distinguishes us as human beings is our ability to stop, reflect and respond to each situation we are faced with, here and now?

Human Doings are great at reacting in similar patterns, as they have been trained and conditioned to do since birth. Most often this reaction comes without thinking about it.
And why not? It’s much easier, isn’t it?

This maybe easier, in the shorter term, but what if you value your ability to think and deliberately choose how you live, yourself? For instance, many of you that have children have probably already witnessed their disappearance into their smart phones. An urgent cry for help was recently issued by one of our children’s schools for help in rescuing our kids from this epidemic of non-interaction. Although phones are banned in their classrooms, at lunch almost every student still sits with his/her friends, but now stares incessantly into his/her own screen without talking. For those of us that take collective transportation, the same phenomenon can be witnessed by adults riding on the train, bus or plane. We can all look busy and not have to interact with anyone! As with everything else there are plusses and minuses to this behavior. For instance beggars usually avoid you and if you are tired from your day you can still look engaged even while turning the rest of the world off. Moreover, just add a pair of sunglasses and put your earphones in and you can pretty much create your own little cave right in the middle of everyone! And, for the most part, this is now accepted behavior.

Yet for a world that desperately needs us to interact and better understand each other, how much are we contributing towards this goal? No wonder the words ”zombies” and ”sheeple” have started to establish themselves in the vernacular.

Now, just for fun, think about how much power the person or company wields, who has access to the information you have chosen to accept? How much influence they have in shaping who you and your childen are and who you all will become?

Yes, you can change the channel, but you are still just taking in information from yet another external source. How much are you giving back to your environment and friends and how powerful is your message? Garbage in…?

The sensational news regarding this current phase of our evolution is that for those of us who recognize this situation and its implications, there is still time to do something.

It also becomes very easy to see how influential you can become when you:

  • Realize the content and quality of  those messages being broadcast
  • Begin reflecting and thinking about who you are, what you stand for and what you want.
  • Start to reflect over and consciously choose with which inputs you interact.
  • Begin expressing your own thoughts to those with whom you communicate

How could the world look if we all started to ”be” human again before we start ”doing” the next task on our list?

Below are some tips on regaining your thought process and your personal soverignty:

  • Be vigilant and question everything rather than just taking it for granted
  • Choose a few powerful adjectives to represent who you are and what you stand for then use them as a personal platform to stand for and from which to live and work.
  • Explore each of your beliefs and see if they still support and encourage your now conscious stand. Some of them, especially those handed down over generations, without question, may be desperately in need of an upgrade.
  • Take time to breathe deeply, calm down and reflect over the choices being given
  • Choose to accept information only from sources that support and encourage the type of life that you truly want to live.
  • Become sensational! Listen to, feel, honor and use all your senses instead of just making a mental thought exercise about everything. Computers do that…
  • Train to express your thoughts and beliefs in a powerful and senstaional way which ”moves” your listeners into action.

For too long we have unconsciously accepted many beliefs without questioning their origin or validity. Our current financial, governmental, ecological and personal world situation seems to be screaming that we can no longer afford this luxury. For instance, did you know that now, more Vietnam veterans have now died due to suicide than were killed in actual combat? The ease of just accepting what is going on without digging deeper and exploring their sources and consequences is having a greater and greater impact upon you and your family’s health, well-being and prosperity. Can you feel it?

Something else to consider is the upcoming Body Harmony Workshop being held in Stockholm Sweden on June 15-18.

I am fascinated with what makes us humans ”tick”, especially when it comes to how we consciously communicate and express ourselves with our body language. My business background is in international sales and sales management, selling everything from automobile tires in Houston, Tx, to retail banking delivery systems in 20 countries. I have graduated from CoachU’s 3 year Coach Training program, been certified as an Extended DISC consultant and become a Certified International Body Harmony Teacher with over 20 years of ”hands-on” experience in bodywork. This rich and varied background combined with over 20 years of being an entrepreneur has blessed me with insights and experiences I never would have noticed in the corporate world. Mainstream business now seems to be waking up to the riches available from more conscious and responsible business practices. Expanding Understanding’s Sensational Soft Skills Toolbox , the books I have written and training I have developed now provide savvy decision makers and their colleagues measurable results and a more restful night's sleep. These tools provide an edge in consciously understanding, deliberately using and profiting from the most powerful communication tool available, our bodies. I look forward to meeting you on this path to mastery in non verbal communication.
