The Responsibility of Taking a good Bodywork session, Kurt Larsson

The Responsibility of Taking a good Bodywork session, By Kurt Larsson

IMG_7444Taking any kind of a bodywork session and getting to the ”goal” of feeling healthier, happier and more prosperous, you definitely run the risk of awakening some uncomfortable memories. Every competent bodyworker understands this and it is something of which you need be conscious. Just a soft, conscious touch on your body can awaken the memory of a pivotal event in your life which has been tucked away and forgotten. Although this can be a frightening prospect to some, congratulations are deserved too. This discovery means you can finally explore and come to terms with how this experience has sub-conscicously shaped and steered your behavior as well as how much energy and self-expression you may have lost. This is what Don MacFarland, Founder of Body Harmony® means when he says, ”your biography becomes your biology”.

Remember, just daring to trigger this experience is already farther and deeper ”down the Rabbit Hole” than most of your friends and relatives will ever go. ”Don’t want to go there” is often given as the main reason that many people keep busy so they do not have to ”think or feel so much”. So great, you and your practitioner have found something! The Question now becomes what will you do with it? This is where it is important that you and your practitioner understand and agree upon the meaning and content of your mutual yet distinct ”responsibilities”.

Responsibility, ”the ability to respond” means your ability to respond, regardless of what anyone else does. As Mother Theresa once famously said, ”I take 100% responsibility for what I do and leave the rest up to God”. Whether you leave the rest up to God, your practitioner or even the Government, the important part is to first take 100% responsibility for the entire process and all possible consequences yourself. If you then get help from some other source, regard it as ”icing on the cake”, as you and your ability to respond 100% make up the cake itself. The good news is that by waking any sleeping dragons you are one step closer to slaying them. The challenge is that once awake it is nearly impossible to get them back to sleep. Count on being physically and emotionally moved by what happens next, but remember you are warmly encouraged stay present and enjoy the ride!

Therefore, it may be worth a few words to discuss why in the world you would want to start this process in the first place. The short answer is efficiency. It takes an enormous amount of energy to lock a traumatic experience (issue) into your tissue and keep it there. You can often sacrifice a large portion of your ability and energy to fully express yourself by tip-toeing around such an issue. Not only that, but you also run the risk of accidentally “triggering” the issue when you least expect or wish it to happen. During a session with an experienced body worker you at least have a safer, more controlled environment to calmly and consciously explore what comes up and handle it. Nothing, whatsoever is guaranteed, but proactively dealing with your issues in the presence of a qualified bodyworker, working with their suggestions, combined with you taking 100% responsibility for a positive and complete outcome will provide you the greatest chance for a liberating and successful session.

A qualified and experienced body worker will be able to serve you best by being a high-quality tool to help you explore your issue. The more they are doing the responsible job of serving you the more they will probably disappear into your service and leave you face to face to tackle your issue once and for all. You will sense their support while you do the work yourself. This means that you should be willing and able to trust your  bodyworker to use his/her skills, experience and suggestions to guide you through your issues easily, efficiently and enjoyably. The only caveat is that your practitioner will only be able to guide you as far as you are willing and able to go yourself.

Should you suddenly begin doubting yourself, your practitioner and/or the process, either consciously or unconsciously, you will probably block further progress. Therefore, if you are currently in Therapy you may want to consult your Therapist first before taking a session. At this point your practitioner can attempt to make you more conscious of this blockage, but often little more. The ball is then squarely in your court and it will be up to you and your ”ability to respond ”to the situation to keep going forward to insure a positive outcome. Blaming your practitioner at this point would be easy, but would you then still be in the driver’s seat of your session and/or more importantly your life? The more you choose to remain responsibly in control of your process, regardless of how uneasy or uncomfortable it becomes, the more you increase your chances to get to the other side and complete your process, All along your path, your practitioner can guide you forward by keeping you present, here and now. sharing anecdotes from similar experiences, to help you anticipate what to expect. This will help you to better understand what is happening. You should also feel a soft, conscious and compassionate touch to help assure you that you have chosen competent company for your entire journey.

Should any of those components be missing, be sure to exercise your responsibility and express to your practitioner what you feel is missing. This whole process is a metaphoric dance between the two of you and the more you dance together the more you can both rest assured you will complete the process.

Release or Re-Lease
The more you remain present, curious with the intention of completing the process, the more you can expect the power of this issue in your tissue to release you from its grip. Working, as you and your practitioner are, on the root cause of this issue, you are effectively cutting away its anchor to free you from its bonds. Even if you do not fully succeed in this particular session you will be more aware of what is causing it and the costs involved with allowing it to continue. This will provide more fuel and determination for your next attempt. Also, your session can continue long after you have left your practitioner’s office. As long as you stay in the ”space” you created during your session, the process will continue to unfold and tension will continue to be released. However, should you choose to stop the process by going back into your old behavior pattern you will be in effect re-leasing it for yet another term. The big issue here is either way, can you guess who is still ultimately responsible for your result?

Synergy: 100% x 100% is more powerful than 50/50
Taking a session is just as important as giving one. Again the entire process is a dance where you and your practitioner negotiate each dance step, navigate past all the other dancers on the floor and adjust to tempo changes, together. The more you both take 100% responsibility for a positive and liberating result (you for your body, mind and behavior and your practitioner for the process and experienced guidance), the more you can count on a resolution. Then it becomes more of a function of relaxing into the process, trusting it and yourself.

In Body Harmony® we understand this powerful process and its consequences. That is why we have a course structure of at least 100 hours of hands on training for each practitioner that must be satisfied before they are allowed to call their work Body Harmony.  A course series in the basics of Body Harmony® will be starting shortly in Stockholm. I have graduated from CoachU’s 3 year Coach Training program, been certified as an Extended DISC consultant and become a Certified International Body Harmony Teacher with over 20 years of ”hands-on” experience in bodywork. This rich and varied background combined with over 20 years of being an entrepreneur has blessed me with insights and experiences I never would have noticed in the corporate world. Mainstream business now seems to be waking up to the riches available from more conscious and responsible business practices. Expanding Understanding’s Sensational Soft Skills Toolbox , the books I have written and training I have developed now provide savvy decision makers and their colleagues measurable results and a more restful night's sleep. These tools provide an edge in consciously understanding, deliberately using and profiting from the most powerful communication tool available, our bodies. I look forward to meeting you on this path to mastery in non verbal communication.
